mapplethorpe on facing death, elegantly

Robert Mapplethorphe, "White Gauze"

Saw this image at the Musée Rodin while visiting Paris last week. Immediately burst into tears, which *rarely* happens. I'm a private cryer (not as in Jon). But I studied this man's (boy's?) face: love, unadulterated, and it's pretty clear that he - or his devoted - is headed towards some irrevocably doomed fate, and I just couldn't help it. The stuff of Shakespearean tragedy.
